Viticulture and Introduction to Wine Making

  • Grape growing (Viticulture) and Wine making (Enology) is rapidly expanding in Virginia, resulting in the need for skilled workers. There are now 250 farm wineries in Virginia.
  • Students will learn through class and hands-on experience about land preparation, irrigation, trellis, planting, weed and pest control, frost protection, cultivation, vine handwork, repairs and maintenance, harvesting, pre-pruning and pruning.
  • In the future, an introduction to the basics of winemaking will be given: sanitation, sorting, crushing, filtering, fermentation process, casking, aging, bottling and labeling on the property.
