Animal Husbandry

  • The increase in the popularity of grass-fed and pasture grown meats has created small, sustainable livestock farms. There are also nearly 41,000 horse operations in the state of Virginia.
  • Students will receive formal training and will care for the livestock on the property, including horses, hogs, cattle, poultry, sheep and rabbits.
  • Skills learned will include:
  • Keeping the animals’ living area sanitary
  • Preparing meals and feeding animals
  • Monitoring animals’ health
  • Administering medicine
  • Overseeing animal training
  • Breeding
  • Care for newborn animals
  • Shearing wool
  • Pasture rotation and management
  • Managing facilities and staff
