Animal Husbandry
- The increase in the popularity of grass-fed and pasture grown meats has created small, sustainable livestock farms. There are also nearly 41,000 horse operations in the state of Virginia.
- Students will receive formal training and will care for the livestock on the property, including horses, hogs, cattle, poultry, sheep and rabbits.
- Skills learned will include:
- Keeping the animals’ living area sanitary
- Preparing meals and feeding animals
- Monitoring animals’ health
- Administering medicine
- Overseeing animal training
- Breeding
- Care for newborn animals
- Shearing wool
- Pasture rotation and management
- Managing facilities and staff
